The focus in this class is on sequences of postures and movements. These include more general forms such as the popular Taiji Qigong Shibashi, but also sequences relating to the development and health of particular aspects and parts of the body. It is not necessary to memorise the movements. Through the regulation of body, breath and mind, qigong practice promotes harmony of the The Three Treasures (essence, vitality and spirit) and so cultivates a deep sense of calm connectedness.

FIRE: An Elemental Qigong Workshop - Sun 16 July

Fire is the expansive phase of the Five Elements cycle. It is associated with heat, the season of summer and the emotion joy. In the body it manifests primarily through the Heart, seen in Chinese medicine as the emperor of our internal kingdom, but its significance and power is such that it is allotted four meridians.

We will explore a variety of static and moving forms that connect to these meridians and their associated organs, and balance and support this work with the Earth and Water Elements. We will incorporate several bird forms, this being the animal most associated with Fire. Working with the Fire Element can bring clarity of mind, aid restful sleep and help us to fully embrace life. The session will be gently paced and will be suitable for the beginner.

Tea will be provided.

Daoist Yoga: Alchemy of Baguazhang - Sun 20 Aug

This workshop will cover preparatory sequences and circle-walking. The Daoist practice of Ba Gua is a physical manifestation of the ideas of the Trigrams (representations of the eight basic forces of the universe) that combine to make up the sixty-four hexagrams of the I Ching, the ancient Chinese oracle text.

The workshop will cover Alchemical sequences designed to improve the strength and structure of the body. We will do this through study of movement and stillness based around the central 'axis' of the body, the pole that connects Heaven (yang) and Earth (yin) through us. In this way we use the practice to balance the energies and forces within us by deepening the connection of mind and body. In circle-walking, the more dynamic aspect of the practice, our movements create a spiral-type vortex with powerfully transformative effects.

Tea will be provided.
