Meditation

What is meditation?

Put simply, meditation is a means to self awareness, change and spiritual insight.
At our Centre we teach two fundamental Buddhist meditation practices: the Mindfulness of Breathing, which enhances our awareness and peace of mind and the Metta Bhavana "the development of loving kindness" which brings about a gentle but radical transformation in our emotional experience.

For further information about meditation please refer to the following site: http://fwbo.com/meditation.html

Our courses are suitable for those with hearing impairments, please contact us before booking. email:

Introductory  Classes

Getting Started
Introductory meditation classes, suitable for newcomers, run every week at lunchtimes and in the evenings. The Tuesday and Thursday night classes are our most popular weekly events. These classes introduce the two core meditation practices that are taught at all our centres: the mindfulness of breathing and loving kindness practices.

Once familiar with these practices there are other options available; these start with a meditation in the first part of the evening followed by discussion. In one room the evening continues with looking at ways of establishing a regular meditation practice and how to deepen it, exploring ways of working with the mind and taking the practices into daily life.

The other option introduces key Buddhist teachings and seeks through discussion to provide a forum where the relevance and practical implications of the ideas can be explored. The emphasis of both classes is to help participants to establish the practices in a meaningful way in their lives.

Many people find that consistency of teacher and group is a supportive way to learn both of the practices we teach, the Metta Bhavana (the development of loving kindness) and the Mindfulness of Breathing. The courses blend practice with theory. Our meditation teachers' approach is informal and friendly.

CARE AND WELL-BEING

MINDFULNESS-BASED COURSES

In the 1980’s scientists from the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Centre in the United States, turned their attention to methods of the East, particularly mindfulness meditation to treat patients suffering from acute stress, pain and depression. They found that this type of meditation [often combined with a psychological approach] is an effective tool to help people explore their condition and become more aware of themselves and the way they think and behave and the choices they can make to have a chance to improve the quality of their lives. Ever since, this approach has gained reputation and is now widely used around the world.

This season, the NLBC is delighted to be able to offer different courses, each of them addressing one specific condition. Qualified and experienced instructors and long-stranding meditation practitioners will lead these courses.
