Great Buddhists
This autumn a series of talks on some of the amazing people who have exemplified Buddhist practice, communicated the teachings of Buddhism, and helped make Buddhism more accessible. These are our speakers:
14-Sep Kusalasara, Shantiteva
12-Oct Ambedkar Day: celebrating the great Indian Buddhist reformer and statesman of the 20th century, Dr BR Ambedkar
9-Nov Sraddhagita On Dhardo Rimpoche, a modern Tibetan bodhisattva
14-Dec Karunagita, Machig Labdrön, the great Buddhist nun who innovated amazing methods for transcending the ego 1000 year ago in Tibet.
Over 20 years ago on retreat in Scotland, Karunagita found herself strangely and powerfully drawn to and influenced by a Rupa (statue) of a dramatic standing female figure on the shrine. Without knowing who she was, she didn’t want to leave without her - she bought her home and has her on her shrine to this day.
The figure was Machig Labdron, a Buddhist nun from Tibet over 1000 years ago. After raising 3 children she went forth, got enlightened and innovated amazing ways to transcend the ego.
In this talk Karunagita will introduce Machig Labdron and talk about the impact she had on her and reflect on the nature of inspiration.
