Racial Diversity and Inclusion at NLBC
On 23 June 2020 the governing council of the North London Buddhist Centre charity released this statement:
“Racism and racial injustice have no place within the Dharma or Buddhist values, and as a centre we aim to create an environment that is open and welcoming to people of all races. All we offer as a centre aims to support deepening awareness, wisdom and compassion, for ourselves and others, rooted in and resonating with the world.”
The Racial Diversity and Inclusion Kula
That same summer in 2020, a group of friends practicing the dharma (the Buddha's teachings) at the North London Buddhist Centre, came together to form a group called the Racial Diversity and Inclusion (RDI) Kula. They were a group of people from different racial heritages, all involved in a range of activities around the Centre and all wanting to see the Centre grow and flourish. Their aim was to explore what we can do to create a context where people of all races feel they are welcome and can explore the Dharma in relevant ways.
Although the kula has now disbanded, our chair Ksantikara would still be keen to hear from anyone with any ideas, suggestions and comments. You can email him on ksantikara@northlondonbuddhistcentre.com.
Since 2020, the People of Colour community within the Triratna Community has grown. There is now a thriving programme of day events (many of which are in London), online gatherings and residential retreats.
