ONLINE: Sangha Night - Celebrating Summer Solstice with the Buddha figure Vairocana

The Sangha is the Buddhist term for the community of people wishing to learn from the Buddha's teachings. Lalitaraja, Santva, Manjumitra, Khemananda and guest Order Members take turns to lead these evenings, practising and communicating Buddhism. A Sangha evening might include a talk, meditation, discussion, workshop, devotional practice. Open to all (though it is helpful if you have had an introduction to the Mindfulness of Breathing and Metta Bhavana meditation practices).

Monday 21st June: Celebrating Summer Solstice with the Buddha figure Vairocana
The Summer Solstice, Litha or Midsummer, celebrates the longest day of the year. In our Solstice celebration led by Lalitaraja we will focus on Vairocana, the Buddha at the centre of the 5 Buddha Mandala. Vairocana is likened to the sun at midday - his name connected to illumination and full Enlightenment. There will meditation and reflection, and a banishing ritual that we’ll do together, finishing with a puja to Vairocana. You might find it helpful to have these things to hand but you will be fine without:-

  • A pen and small pieces of paper

  • A flame proof bowl (assuming that you have somewhere safe to burn your small pieces of paper at the end of the ritual!)

  • Bright colours on your shrine/meditation area and your body.

  • Some fresh summer herbs, a piece of kitchen roll or cloth and some red thread (to be buried at the end of the ritual)

  • You could download and print a picture of Vairocana for your shrine

  • Have this mantra to hand for the ritual - oṃ amogha vairocana mahāmudrā maṇipadma jvāla pravarttaya hūṃ
