Mon 1 Feb - The Dharma of Politics and Society with Vishvapani
Many of us feel, intuitively, that Buddhism has something to offer society that's relevant to social injustice and challenges such as the global climate emergency. But doing so prompts many questions. Should we build an alternative Buddhist ’New Society’, or should we try to affect the ‘old' non-Buddhist society? How can we engage with social issues in ways that stem from Buddhist principles, and what should we make of the differing political positions? What do we have to offer that is most distinctive? For ten years Vishvapani edited Dharma Life, which explored the encounter of Buddhism and the modern world. Since 2006 he has been the Buddhist contributor on Radio 4’s Thought for the Day, commenting on topical issues from a Buddhist perspective. And for several years he has engaged with the Westminster Parliament and the Welsh Government on how mindfulness and related approaches can contribute to public policy. Tonight he will be sharing his reflections on what Buddhists have to contribute to the wider world.
